Abstract

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by persistent impairment in reciprocal social interaction and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior. Its distinctive behavioral features make it difficult to maintain oral health and to get cooperative dental treatments for patients with autism. This report describes space management of a child with autism. The dental treatment was performed under general anesthesia, and the immature right permanent mandibular first molar was extracted due to dental caries. After 2-year follow-up, the right mandibular second molar erupted into the first molar space and the tooth bud of the right mandibular third molar has been developed favorably.
